Volunteering for Latin American Women

You can improve your chances of getting work in the UK job market, make new friends or give something back to your community through volunteering at LAWRS. We aim to develop your work skills, especially if you're finding it difficult to get your skills and work experience recognised.

Our programme has been developed with you in mind, and offers you:

  • work experience
  • training
  • individual support
  • opportunities to make new contacts
  • job-seeking support
  • language support
  • references

Who can be a volunteer?

Any Latin American woman can become a volunteer. For some positions you might need to have a good grasp of the English language, or know about computers. The requirements vary according to the type of role, so it's best to contact us or read the task description if there's a publicised vacancy.

What type of work can I do?
Roles vary according to availability, but usually fit into these areas:

  • Interpreters
  • Translators
  • Counsellors
  • Befrienders
  • Project Assistants
  • Advice Assistants

Opportunities are usually advertised in LAWRS' entry in La Tertulia volunteering bank.

What can you offer me?
You'll work alongside a member of staff, will shadowing her and later be expected to work more independently. We will also support you with regular supervision, trainings and social events. Your travel and lunch expenses will be reimbursed, so you needn't be out of pocket.

How much time do I need?
We ask for a minimum commitment of six months; there is no maximum time limit.

Each task description has the timetable on it, but the following may serve as a guide:

Office based work: one full day a week (Mon - Fri); or
Therapy or Interpreters: a few hours a week (Mon - Fri); or
Translators: A few hours a week (in your own time).
