Since then, LAWRS has grown and expanded its services to provide a holistic approach to supporting and helping women 'grow' – but at its core remains the essence of our founding members’ vision.
LAWRS provides a one-stop service for women to inform themselves of their rights and options and enable themselves to live a ilfe free from violence and hardship. Our services today include advice and information, counselling and therapy, employment support, and workshops and ESOL classes.
The Latin American Women's Rights Service (LAWRS) was founded in 1983 by a group of Latin American women who saw a huge gap in the services that existed for the women migrating to the UK from Latin America. Their needs were not met by mainstream organisations and our founders recognised that as women, as well as migrants, their experiences were specific and different.
An advice, information and advocacy service was established to inform women of their rights and enable them to access services, in a culturally, linguistically and gender specific setting.
LAWRS’ mission is to provide tools for growth to empower Latin American women in the UK to pursue personal and social change.
We focus on meeting the needs, both immediate and long term, of women affected by poverty and abuse.
We offer advice, advocacy, information and counselling services in a personalised, confidential and impartial manner. All our services are free and in Spanish and Portuguese.
